How would you explain what SharePoint is to the business layperson?
Depends on the businessperson. Find out what document management/ collaboration/ data access problems they have and explain how Sharepoint can help.

There is no single answer to your question. I have found out that the best way to explain SharePoint to a manager is to find a business problem he has and then explain how SharePoint can solve the problem at hand, it might be collaboration, but it might be something else, or something so trivial you would not ever think of it (e.g. check-in/out).
The simple answer is that it is in the name "Share" "Point".
A Point or place where people can Share information. Where people are looking for and generating information.
If I talk to a business person, I don't talk about BDC. I talk about connectivity with other systems where some basic integration is foreseen in the product.
I don't talk about CMS, I talk about exposing the correct information to the right people at the right time.
I talk about SharePoint being a platform that helps him achieve those goals, where some stuff is already built in and where we, as an integrator, are able to extend the platform to make sure his goals are met.
Collaboration is a term I do use, but I never go into detail too much on a technical point. I try to figure out where the business user's pain points are located, and then I tell him how those can be solved. Once that is done, I start showing how it might look from an enduser perspective. I mainly use the standard SharePoint 2007 site to get a feeling of how Microsoft targets it to endusers.

I am developing a company website/portal in SharePoint, and am trying to figure out the best way to organise it into site collections, sites and subsites -- I'm confused by the terminology I think. The site has a public-facing Internet presence which is to be managed via the Publishing WCM features of SharePoint. Behind the scenes there will be some portal features, such as personalised... again be in a separate site collection. I guess my general question is, what are the rules of thumb for when to use a site, when to use a subsite, and when to use a site collection?

I'm trying to understand the SharePoint hierarchy of objects and don't understand SPWebService . Here is what I have: SPFarm contains One or (usually) multiple WebApplications, each contains One or more SPSites which then contain one or more SPWebs I know that each SPWebApplication can have one or more SPContentDatabases and that SPSite is really a child of a Content Database which...? And under what circumstances would someone have more that one SPWebService?
I have come across blogs about how to setup an external content type. I am newbie in SharePoint 2010. Here is what I'm trying to do... I have portal users (active directory integrated). A user from x department will fill an employee request form which includes 4-5 textboxes and possibly a combobox. After he/she fills the form the related department's manager approves or rejects it. That's all. I have a SQL table which includes the user's department, email and department manager info so that I can map user from AD account name. User's manager is not found on AD in our structure. So how can I achieve this? Thanks for any help.
I'd really like to prepare development environment for Sharepoint 2010. This is what I did: I installed Windows 7 x64 I installed VMWare Workstation Created a VM domain controller based on Windows... (Windows6.1-KB974405-x64.msu) Enabled all roles indicated in the list (IIS and WCF) Installed Sharepoint Foundation 2010 didn't run the product configuration wizard (yet) created two additional domain user accounts without any particular rights: SPF_DATABASE for database credentials SPF_ADMIN for farm credentials Added domain administrator in SQL Server 2008 R2 with sysadmin rights started Sharepoint
added another server to the farm, moved the central admin with the stsadm tool, and removed the old server from the farm. Here is what I have tried: Deployed to two other farms: successfully deployed... with no errors Checked the databases (namely config) to see if there are quota/growth/space issues. I'm having problems installing development machine for SharePoint (Foundation) 2010. This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing SharePoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7
I'm about to start developing a custom business application on top of Sharepoint 2010. I haven't done anything on this product but client insists on it so I don't have a choice. Application info I..., but as this app will run under Sharepoint all this will be done by it. I won't have to handle authentication/authorisation. Application will run processor intensive business processes and it will support three... additional costs that Server brings with its licensing. Which services will most probably be used? I will most probably use Business Connectivity Service, but what about others like Managed Metadata Service
