wsp deployment sometimes doesn't update gac-ed assembly on all servers

  • wsp deployment sometimes doesn't update gac-ed assembly on all servers Brian

We are finding recently, with our wsp deployments, that on some of the WFE/APP servers in our farm that the assembly contained in the WSP, which should be gaced, is updating some servers but not all. Almost like the assembly in the GAC is locked on some servers but not others.

  • Have a look at the SharePoint trace logs on each machine for messages related to those DLLs.

What does the Solution Management screen say about deployment to these servers?

  • Are you fully retracting and removing your originally deployed solutions before updates?

  • I have run into this before using WSP Builder and the only thing I could get to work was to run STSADM and go through a full uninstall, including removing from the solution store.

Are you running STSADM -o execadmsvcjobs after upgrading as well?

  • I have a webpart that is part of a larger solution, deployed as a WSP using WSPBuilder. I can see the SafeControl entry in the web.config and can see that the assembly has deployed to the GAC. The solution reports as installed OK in Central Admin and the feature is activated at the site collection. When I attempt to add the webpart to a page, I'm getting an error stating that the "Type could not be found or is not registered as safe." I have removed this solution from MOSS and completely re-created the webpart, in case I've messed up GUIDs or something. I'm not sure what to check next. Any

I've read the documentation starting at I currently have a working BDC assembly; I know it works because I can make an external content type list from it. I am currently stuck on step three: "Use Microsoft SharePoint Designer to discover the DLL and create a model". I don't see where to do this at all. Under

  • administration is not there. It was removed using the config wizard. We removed central admin from all servers to clean everything out, and we tried installing Central Admin on WSS1. The alternate access mappings still point to central admin on WSS3. We tried deleting the alternate access mappings, but SharePoint won't let you delete central admin's mapping. Later, we removed central admin from all of our servers and tried creating the Central Admin website on WSS3, where SharePoint already thinks it is. But for some reason SharePoint is creating the alternate access mappings using SSL, and we don't have

  • When you deploy a feature with assemblies that get registered in the GAC, where do these assemblies get stored? I thought this would be an easy thing to find, but apparently my Bing-foo is weak today. P.S. I tried to add tag's "GAC" and "assembly", but they didn't exist and I can't create new tags.

  • We have a server farm that is having issues deploying WSPs. The odd thing is that the server goes through all the motions of deploying the WSPs with no errors. That is, the job is scheduled... that existed prior to the upgrade. This is also the case in a retract, delete, add, deploy scenario. Note: Our server topology has changed over time. Our Central Admin machine reached its End of Life, so we... new files (rules out WSP as the problem). • I have VMWare image clone of our virtual Sharepoint web frontend. All the connections are the same (same farm basically), same exchange server, same sql server. I am afraid to connect this box to the network. Will this change anything on the farm? Unfortunately the sql and exchange server connections are production servers, whereas this box is a development/testing server. This server was supposed to be a fail-over project that got trashed, and now I need to use it for testing. Will anything I change in this server reflect changes in the other server? Also, because the network is disabled I

  • I was reading someone else's post on comparing some of the wsp building tools when someone stated you could reverse engineer something like a .stp file created site into source files (for example the fab-40 application templates). I would really like to know how to do this as there are a few of the templates that are like 80% of what I need to build a solution. I think it would have been awesome had MS released the source files for all 40 of the templates!
