I am trying to find the best way to accomplish the following: Move an existing share point application's content and meta databases, back them up and restore them to a different machine. In order to do this I am using the stsadm tool as follows: To backup, I use this command:

stsadm -o backup -url http://devpn-004:1234 -directory c:\sharePointBackup -filename testBackup.bak -backupmethod full -percentage 10

To restore, I use this command:

stsadm -o restore -url %1 -directory c:\sharePointBackup -restoremethod overwrite -percentage 10

The backup completes successfully. However, when I try to restore, I get the following errors:

Provisioning of the web application, SharePoint - 1234, has encountered the following error: System.ArgumentException: The IIS Web Site you have selected is in use by SharePoint.
You must select another port or hostname.

Object MySharepointDB1234 failed in event OnRestore. For more information, see the error log located in the backup directory.
SqlException: Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

The machine on which the restore takes place already has an existing web application at the port specified, and since the overwrite flag is used, I would expect no errors. I would appreciate any help and insight on the best practice to backup from machine a and restore to machine b a complete application.

  • Did you provision the application before doing a restore? I would provision a test site collection to validate that the application is working before trying to restore a site collection to it.

I'm not familiar with the %1 for the URL, you may want to specify the actual url.

  • I try to perform a restore using stsadm. When the operation completes, I get the following message: Restore failed for Object [Sharepoint Database Name] in event OnPostRestore. For more information, see the error log located in the backup directory. However, I am unable to find the error log. What is the "backup directory" that the message mentions? Also, it appears like the error has to do with my SP database. What could be causing it? Thanks!

  • How can you change the SharePoint 2010 Central Administration site so that it works over SSL, rather than a random port over http? Other sites on the server may also use SSL, so would use a host... binding without defining an IP address... suggesting that wildcard ip's may work (and the same certificate used on different sites). Is it just a case of configuring the site in IIS as you would any other secure site, or do you also have to run 'stsadm' to tell SharePoint you have done this as well?

  • We have taken over a site where My Sites are placed in the Intranet web application. I want to migrate the My Sites to a dedicated host site. From what i have been able to find out so far, I will need to do an STSADM -o backup of each personal site and restore it into the new content database. I will be automating this process using PowerShell. Has anyone tried this? Any caveats i need to be aware of? Since i need to move site collections out of an existing content database into another, as far as i can see i cannot use a simple SSP migration. Any help appreciated :-) EDIT: I wrote
